  • Gladstone's Emergency Storm Shelter

    A reminder to all Gladstone residents: In the event of severe weather, St. Thomas Church (351 Cliff Street) serves as the City’s designated emergency shelter. If you need a safe place during a storm, you’re welcome to shelter there until conditions improve. A member of the Gladstone Fire Department will be onsite to assist and guide residents as needed. Should you shelter in place or head to the emergency shelter? Stay where you are only if  your current location is secure—such as a well-built structure, away from windows. If you’re in a mobile home, vehicle, or exposed area, please utilize the emergency shelter for your safety. Storm Safety Home Checklist: 🏠 Structural Safety ☐ My home has a solid foundation and is built to modern building codes. ☐ Windows are impact-resistant or equipped with storm shutters. ☐ Roofing is rated for high winds, and roof straps/clips are installed. ☐ Garage doors are reinforced or braced against wind pressure. 🛋 Interior Preparedness ☐ I have a designated safe room or small, windowless space on the lowest level. ☐ I’ve stocked emergency supplies: flashlights , batteries , weather radio , first aid kit , water, & non-perishable food. ☐ Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers are in working order. 💧 Flood & Wind Protection ☐ Utilities (electrical panels, HVAC, water heater) are elevated or protected. ☐ A sump pump with battery backup is installed and tested. ☐ My property is graded to direct water away from the foundation. ☐ Windows and doors are sealed to prevent leaks and drafts. 🌳 Outdoor Safety ☐ All outdoor furniture, grills, and tools can be secured before storms. ☐ Trees and branches around my home are regularly trimmed. ☐ Gutters and downspouts are clear to allow proper drainage. 📻 Communication & Planning ☐ I have a household emergency plan (meeting points, contacts, etc.). ☐ I own or have access to a backup power source for critical devices. ☐ Weather alerts are enabled on my phone or NOAA weather radio.

  • Spring Clean-up Weekend!

    The annual Citywide Spring Clean-up is set for June 21st & 22nd! The landfill will be open all day Saturday and Sunday, with roll-off containers available for disposal. We will not be collecting items from the curb as we’ve done in the past, but we’re happy to help with loading or transporting large items to the landfill. Please bring your own trailer or other means for hauling. Smaller quantities will be free to those who would like to fill their own containers, such as 5-gallon buckets. With yard work in full swing, we also encourage everyone to review a few key ordinances which are listed below. These ordinances help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming community while preventing potential hazards. By keeping your property in compliance, you’re helping to keep Gladstone clean, safe, and looking its best! 10.0302 Accumulation of Refuse Prohibited No person shall permit or allow to accumulate in or about any yard, lot, place, or premises; or upon any street or sidewalk, adjacent to or abutting upon any lot, block or place, or premises owned and occupied by that person, any and all refuse, nor allow such yard, lot, place, or premises to be or remain in such condition. 10.0402 Storage or Accumulation of Trash, Rubbish, Junk, Contrary to Public Health & Safety It is hereby determined that the storage or accumulation of trash, rubbish, junk, junk automobiles, abandoned motor vehicles, building materials, and the maintenance of blighted structures upon private property within the city tends to result in blighted and deteriorated neighborhoods, the increase in criminal activity, the spread of vermin and disease, and is contrary to the public peace, health, safety, and general welfare of the community. (Source: North Dakota Century Code section 39-26-01) 10.0403 Unlawful to Store or Accumulate Trash, Rubbish, Junk It shall be unlawful for any person to store, or permit the storage or accumulation of, trash, rubbish, junk, junk automobiles, or abandoned motor vehicles on any private property in the city except within a completely enclosed building, or upon the business premises of a duly licensed junk dealer, junk buyer, dealer in used auto parts, dealer in second-hand goods or junk gatherer. Such storage or accumulation of trash, rubbish, junk, junk automobiles, or abandoned vehicles on any private property in the city is hereby declared to be a nuisance and shall be abated in the manner described in this Article. 10.0404 Storage or Accumulation of Building Materials Prohibited It shall be unlawful for any person to store or permit the storage or accumulation of building materials on any private property, except in a completely enclosed building, or except where such building materials are part of the stock in trade of a business located in said property, or except when such materials are being used in the construction of a structure on the property in accordance with a valid building permit issued by the city and such construction is completed within a reasonable time. Such storage or accumulation of building materials on any private property in the city is hereby declared to be a nuisance and shall be abated in the manner described in this Article. 10.0502 Weeds and Tall Grasses Prohibited No owner of any lot, place or area within the City or the agent of such owner, shall permit on such lot, place, or area and the one-half of any road or street lying next to the lands or boulevards abutting thereon, noxious weeds, other deleterious, unhealthful growths, or tall grasses. Whenever used in this ordinance, the term “tall grasses” shall mean all grass more than eight inches in height.
